At Amcor <\/a>(formerly Berry BPI), the existing afterburner was due for replacement. The installation no longer met current requirements regarding emissions, energy consumption, and sustainability. To future-proof the production facility, CERVITECH BV conducted an extensive study of the existing production processes and the plant's planned expansions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results of this study formed the basis for an integrated optimization project. The project encompassed not only the supply of a new Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) but also the optimization of the production process, engineering of the complete installation, integration of machinery and piping, and final commissioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 1<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

We conducted flow and concentration measurements on the production machines connected to the existing RTO system. Using this measurement data, the team created a detailed blueprint of the plant. This provided an accurate picture of current process flows, emission levels, and capacity requirements. In addition, the project team constructed the rooftop foundation in preparation for the next phase of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 2<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Based on the measurement results from phase 1, we developed a plan to further improve the process values. Subsequently, the team implemented these optimizations within the production environment. Following implementation, we re-analyzed the airflows and concentrations. These results formed a new blueprint featuring improved process values \u200b\u200band higher system efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 3<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

We determined the required capacity for the new RTO based on the collected process data and Amcor\u2019s future production plans. Simultaneously, the engineering team developed the comprehensive project plan, covering the schedule, technical specifications, safety aspects, and implementation strategy. The capacity of the new RTO was established using the previously determined parameters and values. During this phase, the complete project plan was finalized, addressing all project-related matters and schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 4<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Following approval of the project plan, we began preparations for the installation of the new RTO. The team constructed a new roof foundation to support the unit. In addition, we replaced the existing valve actuators with modern fail-safe models. This upgrade enhanced both the operational reliability and the safety of the installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 5<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

We installed the new RTO system on the roof and fully connected it to the existing production environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 6<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

We handled the complete start-up and commissioning of the new RTO system. During the preparatory work in December 2023, production remained fully operational because the new system had not yet been connected to the production process. On January 8 and 9, the team installed the new piping between the bypass valves and the RTO system. In addition, we established the full communication link between the production lines and the new RTO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon completion of the work, Amcor resumed production as planned. The transition to the new RTO system proceeded without disruption, ensuring a successful commissioning process free of unplanned production downtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delivery also includes measuring the sizes of remaining VOCs in the air after cleaning the RTO. The legislation prescribes a maximum value of 100mg\/Nm3. The new RTO even remained below < 10mg\/Nm3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connection with new flexographic press<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

A maintenance contract was also concluded with Amcor. Following the successful installation of the RTO, the next step was carried out. A new flexographic printing press was installed. CERVITECH handled the entire process for connecting to the existing RTO installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work comprised the supply and installation of the piping, the realization of the electrical couplings, and the commissioning of both the pressure connection and the associated systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heat exchanger<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

This summer, CERVITECH BV, together with RELOX and HOLTROP & JANSMA, is launching a new sustainability project. As part of this project, the team will supply, install, and commission an innovative heat exchanger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditionally, printing companies use natural gas for the drying process. In this new setup, the system utilizes hot water derived from recovered waste heat as the energy source for the drying process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to this solution, Amcor makes optimal use of available waste heat to dry ink during the production process. As a result, the company significantly lowers energy consumption, further reduces emissions, and enhances the sustainability of the production environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project started on 1 March 2023 and represents an important next step in making the production site more sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the previously installed Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) makes a significant contribution to local air quality. The system substantially reduces emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ensures cleaner process air discharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
